Snakes
are one of those species that for some reason instill in many people a sense
of fear. The truth is they are typically benevolent creatures that are an excellent
form of rodent control and are extremely beneficial to have around. Of the many
species of Oregon snakes, only the rattlesnake has the potential to do any harm,
and they live only in the dryer areas of the state
Even so, when you encounter a snake of any type, believe it or not, they are probably more afraid of you than you are of them, and will do whatever they can to avoid you. They will only react aggressively if you leave them no escape route and no choice. If you encounter a snake, simply walk around it, or if it is somewhere that you don't want it to be, gently push it with a stick or similar tool and it will rapidly disappear.
