Green Heron

by Brian Coyle

The green heron (Butorides striatus) is a colorful bird. The legs are yellow, the underside and neck are dark brownish-red and the top of the head and back are a deep iridescent green. This is one of the smaller heron species of North America. An adult stands about 18-inches tall with a wingspan close to 25 inches. It may appear even smaller because it often has its head pulled in tight to its body so that the long neck is unnoticeable.

It prefes to live in moist areas such as densely vegetated marshes, shorelines, and streams. The green heron typically hunts for prey from a branch near the water's surface.
